Conversations at IIT Gandhinagar often involve words that are specific to engineering institutes, IITs, and are sometimes specific to the geography and culture of IIT Gandhinagar itself. This page seeks to enumerate a common subset of the "IIT Gandhinagar Lingo" -- words/phrases that we use on a regular basis at IIT Gandhinagar (and as members of the community, outside), that don't hold the same meaning elsewhere.

The following list only means to informally document how these words are used today, and are definitely subject to change in the future.

Common Phrases[edit | edit source]

  • Fachcha [fach-cha] n. A first year male student, generally from the B.Tech programme (plural: Fachche)
  • Fachchi [fach-chi] n. A first year female student, generally from the B.Tech programme (see Fachcha)
  • Maggu [mag-gu] n. A boring, uninteresting person who studies all day.
  • Secy [sek-ee] n. A secretary of some group/club/council. For example, the Tech Secy is the Technical Secretary of the Student Council.
  • GPL [gee-pee-ell] n. abbr. "Gaand Pe Laath": the communal act of hitting people's behinds, esp. during birthdays or celebrations. See GPL.
  • Blith n. Short for Blithchron, IIT Gandhinagar's annual cultural fest.
  • AML n. Short for Amalthea, IIT Gandhinagar's annual technical summit.
  • Acads/Acad 1. n. (proper) Short for Academic Blocks, eg: "I'm at Acad"; 2. n. (common) The act of studying, eg: "Busy with acads"
  • Chhaapna [chhaap-na] v.i, v.t The act of copying academic material from another person.
  • Chamunda [cha-mun-da] n. (proper) Chai shop and Pan Parlour across the road from Gate 2. See Chamunda Pan Parlour.
  • FP [eff-pee] n. abbrv. "Foundation Programme", IIT Gandhinagar's 40-day flagship programme for B.Tech freshers. See Foundation Programme. Also see Aarohan, the equivalent of the Foundation Programme for graduate students.
